HAZUS Scenarios

In October of 2006, several states requested that HAZUS analysis be performed on a state by state basis to be used in exercise and catastrophic planning efforts. This analysis was performed throughout November and December 2006. For continuity, the same scenario was used in each state analysis. This scenario includes -

  • HAZUS MR-1 Default Building, Infrastructure, & Population Inventories
  • New Madrid Seismic Zone, Southwest Segment
  • Magnitude 7.7
  • USGS Updated Ground Motion Data
    - Peak Ground Acceleration, Peak Ground Velocity

    - 1.0 Second Spectral Acceleration and .3 Second Spectral Acceleration
  • CUSEC State Geologists Liquefaction Data

Although the NSMZ Southwest Segment scenario projects the most damage across the 8 state region, this scenario might not be the worst case for an individual state.  Please remember that in the provided reports, the results are not meant to be definitive or an end product, but a baseline and starting point for planning and exercising purposes.  Analysis by other agencies using different modeling methods might produce different results.  For instance, the Mid-America Earthquake Center is working on creating more detailed loss estimations for the FEMA New Madrid Seismic Zone Catastrophic Planning Initiative.

The results for the individual state analysis are available for download by clicking on the links below.  These links will allow you to download a zip file which contains all reports for the analysis that are available in HAZUS.  If you are interested in nearby state damages, please download their state specific file. Based on your connection speed, downloading individual state files can take from five minutes to 30 minutes.
