USGS begins subsurface exploration
with Cone Penetration Test Truck (CPT) in CUSEC States

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) CPT truck rolled into the central U.S. in early October to begin refining their databases on soil conditions which are susceptible to liquefaction. Scientists hope to get a better idea of where earthquakes will liquefy soil and how much the tremors will shake the central U.S. The scientists are working throughout the CUSEC states starting first with Arkansas and Tennessee and gradually working their way up to Indiana.

The work is scheduled to continue in the spring of 2004, with site visits planned for North Mississippi. A delegation of scientists from the Mississippi Geological Survey, and the Mississippi Minerals Resource Institute, and CUSEC visited with USGS at a site along the Wolf River, which runs through Memphis, to learn more about the work and to begin preparation for the spring visit.

The work is being done as part of a grant from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
