CUSEC Board Member announces retirement
December 2004 - CUSEC's longest, current sitting board member, Jerry Uhlmann, has announced that he is retiring from his post as Director of the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency.  He was the is also the longest continuous State Emergency Management Director in the country.   Mr. Uhlmann was recognized at the most recent CUSEC Board meeting for his commitments in educating the public on the earthquake hazard in the central United States.  In addition to serving as the Director of SEMA for 12 years, Mr. Uhlmann had a 32 year career with the Missouri National Guard.  For more information on Mr. Uhlmann's retirement, see the SEMA News Release

Donations Management section now online
November 2004 - A new section of the CUSEC website has been added,  Donations Management.  This section gives detailed information on donated goods and services during disasters.  Topics include:  types of donations, best practices, and much more.  Visit the new section today to learn more. 

Public Health Emergency Response Guide Now Available
October 2004 - The Public Health Emergency Response Guide for State, Local, and Tribal Public Health Directors has been finalized and can now be accessed on the CDC Emergency Preparedness and Response website at A pocket-sized field version of the guide will be available to state, local, and tribal public health departments in January 2005. 

2004 National Earthquake Conference
September 2004 - The 2004 National Earthquake Conference was held in St. Louis, Missouri, September 26-30, 2004 at the Adams Mark Hotel.  The conference was a big success and was sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Geological Survey.  More information can be obtained by visiting the conference website or by contacting the Western States Seismic Policy Council ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. CUSEC & USGS Release Historical Earthquake Map
April 2004 - CUSEC and the USGS held a press conference today at the CUSEC offices today to unveil a new map that has been overtwo years in the making.  The map depicts historical earthquakes that were large enough to be felt, starting in 1699.

New Indiana SEMA Director Appointed
February 2004 - Indiana State Emergency Management Agency Executive Director, Pat Ralston, retired from public service to pursue a career in the private sector.  Mr. Ralston was the current Chairman of the Board of Directors for CUSEC and served with SEMA since March of 1997.  Indiana Governor Joe Kernan appointed Luther Taylor of South Bend, Indiana the new Director of the agency.

CUSEC Journal, Summer 2004
